Yarn kit for Novice Sweater or dress, knitted in the pattern for Novice Sweater from PetiteKnit. With this yarn option, the sweater/dress is knitted in 1 strand DK Reinforced Merino Wool held together with 1 strand Lace Mohair/silk. Unfortunately, we do not have the rights to sell the pattern, but it can be purchased here:

If you want to knit the sweater/dress longer than the pattern suggests, either on the body or the sleeves, you must go up a size.

The Novice Sweater is knit seamlessly from the top down. That means that you will begin by knitting the neckband, then the yoke, then the body, and finally the sleeves. The sweater is knit in stockinette stitch, while the neckband, bottom edge (waist band), and cuffs are knit in rib.

The Novice Sweater has a round yoke, which is shaped by knitting increases on four rounds evenly separated on the yoke.

For the dress, you continue knitting until you have the desired length (or until you run out of yarn - then it is recommended to knit the sleeves before you finish knitting the body!). The yarn gives a little weight to the dress so it hangs smoothly and nicely; DK Reinforced Merino Wool together with Lace Mohair/silk means that the dress holds its shape very well. If you want a hem dress, choose a size larger than you wear. Then it might be a good idea to insert a split on one side - get in touch if you want a description of the procedure.😊

The pattern for the Novice Sweater is particularly aimed at new knitters. It is written in detail without abbreviations.

Size guide and measurements

Note that you can only start from the measurements in the recipe if the knitting strength is respected.

The sizes XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL (4XL) 5XL correspond to chest measurements of approximately 80-85 (85-90) 90-95 (95-100) 100-110 (110-120) 120-130 (130-140) 140-150 cm. Novice jumpers should have a range of motion (positive ease) of 5-10 cm. This means that if you, for example, measure 90 cm around the chest (measure yourself with a measuring tape), you should knit size S, which has a 98 cm excess width.

Size guide and measurements

You can only rely on the measurements in the pattern if you are able to achieve the correct gauge. The sizes XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL (4XL) 5XL are intended to fit a bust measurement of approximately 80-85 (85-90) 90-95 (95-100) 100-110 (110-120) 120-130 (130-140) 140-150 cm [31½-33½ (33½-35½) 35½-37½ (37½-39¼) 39¼-43¼ (43¼-47¼) 47¼-51¼ (51¼-55) 55-59 inches] . The Novice Sweater is meant to have a loose fit (positive ease) of 5-10 cm [2-4 inches]. This means that if your bust circumference is 90 cm [35½ inches] (measure yourself with a measuring tape), you should knit a size S that has a bust of 98 cm [38½ inches].

Sizes: XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL (4XL) 5XL

Sweater’s bust: 91 (98) 103 (109) 116 (128) 138 (149) 161 cm [35¾ (38½) 40½ (43) 45½ (50½) 54¼ (58½) 63½ inches]

Total length: Measured mid back without neckband: 54 (55) 57 (60) 62 (64) 65 (66) 68 cm [21¼ (21¾) 22½ (23½) 24½ (25¼) 25½ (26) 26¾ inches]

Dress length: Measured in the middle of the back of the neck = 108 cm [42.5 inches], or desired length

More information

DK Reinforced Merino Wool:

Extrafine merino wool is used for this yarn so that it feels soft and gentle on the skin. The yarn is spun with extra long fibers to produce a yarn that is flexible and strong with a silky feel and shine. It is incredibly soft and elastic, and a small amount of nylon has been added for extra strength and dimensional stability to the yarn.

Lace Mohair/silk:

Mohair's softness depends primarily on the quality of the fibers. Superkid mohair comes from the first sorting, and is the softest and thinnest fibers you get from the mohair goat. The second sort is usually what is called kid mohair, and is also soft, but not as soft as the superkid mohair. Superkid mohair can be used close to the skin, and provides incredibly light and airy garments. The silk gives the yarn a lovely, exclusive mother-of-pearl sheen.

The yarn is thin, so it is very suitable as a companion thread for e.g. many of PetiteKnit's designs. This yarn is well suited for ego knitting and children's knitting.

Advice when knitting with hand-dyed yarn
Hand-dyed yarn, as the name suggests, is a craft, and there will be differences between skeins. This means that it is not necessarily just a matter of unraveling the yarn and starting to knit. Now, we're not going to make it more complicated than it needs to be, but there are a few things that might be good to know before you get started.

We recommend that you knit every other round from different skeins to camouflage any color differences. The more colorvariety in the yarn, the more important is this. Kimmie Munkholm shows this nicely when knitting circular in this video, and when you knit back and forth in this video.

If you don't want to knit every other round from different skeins (this is done at your own risk 😉), it is recommended to do this a few rounds when changing yarn. This applies regardless of the color of the yarn.
Wash and care of garments knitted in hand-dyed yarn
We recommend hand washing followed by a quick spin, or wool wash program if you trust your washing machine. Use ONLY detergent intended for wool/silk (Milo or such). Feel free to add a little clear vinegar - this helps preserve the colors. Do not soak the garment.

Please note that the yarn may contain excess colour. Therefore, wash separately the first time.

All knitted garments should be stored flat.
